Religious Studies

Development Objectives

Objective I:To follow the example of Christ, to serve with prayers, to build students’ character, good conduct to treat others with sincerity.

Strategy

  • To add more content to the praying session, make optimal use of lessons and morning assembly and encourage students to care for others with prayers.

Overview

To encourage students to serve with prayer, we originally planned to arrange three praying sessions at the beginning of each term. The praying session started with worship and inspirational short stories about life to capture the interest and attention of students to cultivate their benevolence to care about the community and the world and let them share their personal and family prayers. Our teachers will guide students to pray in class and sometimes invite student representatives to offer prayers. Praying after classes are encouraged.

Effectiveness and Review

Praying sessions have been carried out at the beginning of Term 1 and Term 2; however, we did not have enough time to have one in Term 3 due to implementing the Bible Reading Programme. Students were taking a keen interest in the first two praying sessions. Students actively shared their prayers and witnesses sharing during classes. It showed that praying sessions could help students develop their character, good conduct of treating others with sincerity and establish the habit of serving with prayers.

Objective II: Promote positive interdisciplinary education and build positive thinking.

Strategy

  • To cooperate with the Reading Promotion Group to implement the Bible Reading Programme. Students can study online bible stories about spiritual characters for children and learn and be reflective about their spiritual life.
  • To co-organise morning assembly with English subject team to promote positive values.

Overview

This year, the subject panel had cooperated with the Reading Promotion Group to organise the Bible Reading Programme during the Lunar New Year and the Easter holiday. Using online Bible apps, students could choose their favourite spiritual characters from the stories and play different games after they finished reading to consolidate what they have learned. After that, students could submit their reading reports, which can be in the formats of texts, pictures, videos or sound recordings, on Google Form.

Moreover, before the Easter holiday, we co-organised a morning assembly with the English subject team to teach the true significance of Easter and explain the events of Passion and Resurrection of Jesus in English.

Effectiveness and Review

More than 300 students participated in the Bible Reading Programme. After being selected by the Religious Studies subject panel, a total of 15 winning entries, including five illustrations, seven pieces of writing, two sound recordings, and a video, were presented in class in April. In students’ sharing, they said they could learn different positive values from their favourite spiritual characters. For example, some shared that they learned to face challenges bravely from David, some learned to love the earth from creating the heavens and the world, and some learned forgiveness from Jesus.

The whole school participated in the English assembly. From the questionnaire, the students expressed that they could learn the true significance of Easter and appreciate the redemption of Jesus from the assembly.
